Rationing the colour

A coloured pencil portrait takes weeks, and most of that time goes into graphite. Skin, hair, fabric, all of it layered up until the tooth of the paper stops showing.

Colour arrives at the end and lands on very little: a red visor, a shirt stripe, a headwrap.

The red itself is nothing unusual. There is simply nothing else coloured anywhere near it.
